Thinning: Artisan colors can be thinned with water instead of solvents used with traditional oil paints. Add water slowly, a little at a time, mixing well on the palette. If too much water is added too quickly, some colors may "foam". By using Artisan painting mediums, you can avoid this phenomenon. Artisan is a water-soluble oil paint made from modified linseed and safflower oils. The colors have been developed to behave and look like traditional oil paints. Artists can use water for thinning instead of solvents like turpentine or white spirit. Painting tools can also be easily cleaned with soap and water.

Because Artisan offers the same depth of color, thick, buttery consistency, handling characteristics, drying times, lightfastness, and opacity/transparency as conventional oil paints, artists can use Artisan with all oil painting techniques. The colors are manufactured using modified oils that are not water-repellent but mix easily with water: this is the main difference between Artisan water-mixable oil paint and traditional oil paints. Artisan has also developed its own range of water-soluble painting mediums, so you can use all possible traditional oil painting techniques and styles – without turpentine or white spirit.

Fast-drying colors (approx. 2 days): Prussian Blue, Umbers. Normal drying time (approx. 5 days): Cadmium Hues, Phthalo Blue (red shade) and Phthalo Greens, Siennas, French Ultramarine, Synthetic iron oxides, Ochres, Titanium White, Zinc White, Lamp Black, Ivory Black. Slow drying time (over 5 days): Cadmiums, Permanent Rose [quinacridone], Permanent Alizarin Crimson.
