“This year, the Christmas stamps have been illustrated by the legendary Mauri Kunnas, known for his children's books that have enchanted several generations,” says Posti's Design Manager Tommi Kantola, who is responsible for the artist selections for the stamps and the supervision of the stamp artwork.

The main characters of the Christmas stamps are the busy gingerbread men, who sing in a Christmas choir led by Santa Claus. The gingerbread men on the stamps are cheerful characters with their own personalities.

The graphic design of the new Christmas stamps was done by Mauri Kunnas' daughter , Jenna Kunnas, who also works as an illustrator. "The color scheme of the stamps is clear and modern Christmassy. The blue and red colors clearly distinguish the stamps from each other. The perforation of the stamps nicely follows the shapes of the gingerbread," says Jenna.

Christmas has been a familiar theme for Mauri Kunnas since the book Santa Claus, published in 1981. Several Christmas-themed books have been written since then, and Kunnas is also known for the family animated film Santa Claus and the Witch's Drum . In total, Kunnas has written dozens of children's books, with a worldwide circulation of well over 10 million.

Mauri Kunnas's handiwork has been seen on Christmas stamps twice before, in 1996 and 2006. The children of Koiramäki appeared on stamps before that in 1994 and 1995. Kunnas has designed a total of 19 stamps, including the recent Christmas stamps.

The Finnish mint mark Piparikuoro is sold in sheets of 10 stamps.
