Andrew Lang (1844–1912), known for Lang's fairy tale books, was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic and anthropologist, but he is best remembered as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang was passionately interested in folklore, mythology, religions and especially the mystical stories of different cultures. This passion led him to compile Lang's storybooks, illustrated by the prolific and successful English artist Henry Justice Ford (1860–1941).

One particular series is known as Andrew Lang's multicolored fairy books, where each fairy is named after a specific color. The illustration for the Paperblanks Violet Fairy notebook is from the cover of Lang's fairy tale book of the same name. The stories of the book, published in 1901, have been collected from Romania, Japan, Lithuania, Portugal and Russia, among others. Ford's Violet Fairy illustration is magical, classic and timeless.
