An Important Friend, The Valentine's Day stamps feature cute animals – including cats, dogs, squirrels and swans – in soft tones, in keeping with the theme.

The illustrations for the Valentine's Day stamps were created by painter Hanna-Maria Mainelakeus. She painted the original images of the stamps on canvas with acrylic paints and a brush. "The small size of the stamps brought its own challenges to the design. I trimmed the details of the images and paid special attention to color differences and contrasts. The images on the stamps retained a nice painterly quality, which was the goal," Mainelakeus says.

Hanna-Maria Mainelakeus is an art entrepreneur whose work includes commissioned works, paintings, her own art fabrics and her own clothing brand. She has also created large photorealistic murals. The graphic design of the Valentine's Day stamps was done by Paula Salviander.
